Non-custodial vs Custodial Crypto Wallets
A plain-language guide to how crypto wallets actually hold your money β and why it matters.
What is a non-custodial crypto wallet?
A non-custodial wallet is a wallet where you hold the private keys (usually a 12- or 24-word seed phrase). No company, exchange or server can move your funds β only the device holding the seed can sign a transaction. This is what people mean by self-custody or "being your own bank".
What is a custodial wallet?
A custodial wallet is a wallet where a third party (typically an exchange like Coinbase or Binance) holds the keys on your behalf. You have an account and a password, but the provider technically owns the addresses. If they freeze the account, get hacked, or go bankrupt, your funds are exposed.
Quick comparison
- Who holds the keys? Non-custodial: you. Custodial: the provider.
- KYC required? Non-custodial: no (to hold funds). Custodial: yes.
- Can funds be frozen? Non-custodial: no. Custodial: yes.
- Recovery if password lost? Non-custodial: only via your seed phrase. Custodial: provider support.
- Counterparty risk? Non-custodial: none. Custodial: full exposure to the provider.
Why AMADEUS Wallet is non-custodial
AMADEUS Wallet generates your seed on-device using the BIP-39 standard. The seed is encrypted with AES-GCM locally and never leaves your phone β not to our servers, not to any third party. We can't recover your seed, and we can't freeze your funds. That's the point.
This model gives you the same guarantees as a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor, with the convenience of a mobile app. In exchange, the responsibility for backing up the seed phrase is yours.
When does a custodial wallet make sense?
Custodial wallets are convenient for beginners who want a "forgot password" flow, and for active traders who need instant deposits on an exchange. But for long-term holdings, self-custody is the industry-standard recommendation β see the 2022 FTX collapse for why.
